The presbytery of the church of Santa Maria della Pomposa° was, in the years 1717-1750, the home of Ludovico Antonio Muratori, the most famous historician and man of letters of the time. He was born in the city of Vignola and was the provost of the church. He was well known in the whole of Europe; among his works, Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, Antiquitates Italiace Medii Aevi, Novus Thesaurus Veterum Inscriptionum, the Annali of Italian history, and others religious and juridical books.
From 1925, the building has been National Monument. Entering thourgh a nice little garden, you can visit the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Antiche Province Modenesi and the Muratoirano Museum. This is a house-museum dedicated to this great intellectual personality. Here, the rooms with the original furnishing conserve the complete works of Ludovico and interesting memorabilia (such as the table, the stick, the confessional, the ink bottle, the baptismal font).
