After the Second Vatican Council, the renewed ecclesiology (the Church seen as “God’s people” rather than an institution) suggested to the National Churches that they should indicate different rules for religious buildings. Built in the first years of the X11th century by the architect Mauro Galantino, winner of the competition for the project, the church is a wonderful example of contemporary design.
The exterior is totally white, dominated by an high bell tower and a huge parvis. The pews are set in an ellipse, symbol of the unity among the believers. The altar is not in the centre and the ambo, in the shape of a mountain, forces the priest to walk through the pews. The baptismal font is connected to a river outside the church; a picturesque Mount of the Olives is behind the altar. On the wall, paintings by the Dutch artist Bert van Zelm.
