Palazzo Santa Margherita has a facade characterized by white pilasters and a big tympanum. The plaque on the entrance says “Patronato pei figli del popolo” (“Aid Society for the sons of the people”). Formerly a monastery, then used by the ducal court (the architect being Francesco Vandelli), in 1874 the palace became an orphanage and remained so until recently.
The nice courtyard with columns and the sala Panaro on the first floor are the main interests of this composite building. Now the Antonio Delfini Library, the biggest in Modena, the Galleria Civica and the Museo della Figurina are housed here.
